Library Instruction & Tours   (including specialized instruction where requested)

***NEW*** FACULTY ORIENTATION TUTORIAL (POWERPOINT)

Library Orientation Tours can be booked by calling Ross Danaher at ext. 2339. Small or large groups are welcome, although the optimal number should not exceed 15 students/group. This allows everyone valuable hands-on experience. The tour begins with a 30-minute presentation on the services and resources we offer, followed by a library quiz which the students complete in the Library using the resources. The quiz also takes about 30 minutes. The completed quizzes are left in the Library to be marked and returned to the teacher.

All tours (including quizzes) are geared toward the specific program the students are currently enrolled in.  Specialized instruction (e.g. Using Statistics via E-Stat, Health Databases, RefWorks and Bibliographic Citation, etc.) are also available upon request.

To avoid disappointment, please book your tour well in advance. One week's notice is preferred.

Faculty are also encouraged to book a tour for themselves. We have lots of great resources that you might not have had an opportunity to use. Many of our computer databases are available to use from your home and office. We would be happy to show you so you can better direct your students and plan their assignments.

Reserve Shelf

What is the Reserve Shelf?

Faculty may request that items be designated for the Reserve Shelf. These are items which must be requested at the Circulation Desk and include books, videos/DVDs, classroom notes, etc. These are items which instructors encourage/direct their students to use and to have access to. This may include items already owned by the Library and/or items belonging to the personal collection of the Faculty member. Library staff can customize the loan period (In-Library Use Only, 1 day, 2 day, 3 day, 1 week or 1 month loan) for items as per the Faculty member's instructions.

How does it get there?

Material may be dropped-off or mailed to the Library at any time, provided a form or sufficient information is attached.Instructors are required to fill out a "Restricted Loan (Reserve Shelf) Form The following information is required: Loan period (In Centre Use Only, 1 day loan, 2 day loan, 1 week, 1 month) instructor's name and contact information, date placed on reserve shelf, date to remove from reserve shelf, course name.

Video/DVD Advance Booking

Faculty should book programs in advance when possible, to avoid last-minute conflict.  This is because some programs are in high demand throughout the semester.  The option of previewing programs at home or in the library is available.

Loan times can vary, discuss with library staff when borrowing or reserving the programs.  Otherwise, a two-day or shorter loan time will be given.  When asking for an extended-loan period, remember others may also want the same program.
