Q: I attend a local high school. Can I borrow items from the Parrott Centre? | A: A letter of authorization, on your school's letterhead, signed by school Principal and photo ID are required to borrow Library books, however you may use our collection on-site at any time. Videos and DVD's may not be borrowed and must be viewed in the library. Interlibrary-loan service and off-campus database access is not available to high school students. Authorization letters are valid for the current academic year and will automatically expire on June 30th. |
Q: I'm a student enrolled in Brock University's Bachelor of Adult Education Degree program and attend classes held at Loyalist College. Q: I am a student at another Ontario College. Can I use my card to borrow books from Loyalist Library? | A: All college staff, faculty or students may borrow in person from any Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology Library. The borrower must present a current identification card issued to the borrower by the home college. If a card is not available and/or no expiry date is indicated on the card, the lending library may request verification of current status. The borrower is responsible for all items borrowed and is subject to terms and fees set-out by the lending library. |
Q: Can I borrow magazines? | A: Yes. Magazines and journals may be signed out for two nights only. *Some exceptions apply* |
Q: I lost my student card. Can I still borrow books? | A: Yes. We will require a copy of your status sheet from Banner and photo ID. This is for your protection as it ensures that all transactions charged to your account are your own. |
Q: Can I renew my books? | A: Yes. You may renew most items for an additional two weeks, providing that it has not been requested by another patron. This may be done in person, over the phone, or online. Click here for instructions for online renewals. All fines or fees must be paid prior to renewing your items. |
Q: Can you order books and articles from other Libraries? How long will it take? | A: Yes. We have many resources from which to obtain materials not currently in the Loyalist Library Collection. Inter-library loan service is available to full and part-time faculty, staff and students. Community members, high school students and alumni are encouraged to inquire at their local public library about inter-library loan service that they may offer. Contact our Inter-library Loan Technician for assistance. Please plan your time wisely as delivery times can vary from 2-3 days to 2-3 weeks. Q: Can I borrow videos and DVDs? | A: Full-time students are permitted a two-day loan for off-campus previewing of most programs. A form must be signed accepting responsibility for damaged or lost programs before the programs are allowed off-campus. Faculty/Administration/Staff can preview programs in the library or at home. Usually a two-day loan is applied but can be extended if necessary. Alumni/Community Users/Continuing Education Students are permitted on-campus viewing only. |
Q: How do I return items? | A: Items can be deposited in the book return slot in the circulation desk during open hours or after hours in the book return slot located on the wall to the left of the library entrance. Late fees will be applied to any item that is returned after its due date including items returned after library hours on the day which it was due. |
Q: How much do you charge for overdue materials? | A: The current fee is $0.25 per day, per item. |
Q: I lost a book. How much will I have to pay? | A: The replacement cost of the book is determined by our Collection Development staff who will select either the same title or the next closest equivalent in the same subject area. The fee is calculated by the adding a $10.00 processing fee to the actual cost (including shipping/handling and taxes) of the item selected to replace the lost material. |
Q: I borrowed a book for a friend and he/she hasn't returned it. Why am I liable? | A: The Library takes great care in assuring that only the rightful owner of a student card borrows material. This is why we require a student ID card or status sheet from Banner accompanied by photo id when you borrow items. You are responsible for any and all material borrowed on your card regardless of the circumstance. |
Q: My parents keep receiving overdue notices from the Library. I no longer live at that address. What can I do? / I gave my new address to Admissions when I registered. Why does the Library still have my old address? | A: The Library system uses the address that was on file at the time you registered with the College. Please contact the Library directly to update your address and/or phone number should your place of residence change. Unfortunately at this time, our Library system is not connected to the Admissions system (Banner) so you will also need to inform Admissions as well. |
Q: What is my PIN? | A: If you are a Loyalist student, your PIN is your date of birth in yymmdd format. If we do not have your date of birth on file, your student number will be used as your temporary PIN. If you are a Loyalist employee, your PIN is the same as your library number. |
Q: My WebCT/Banner password doesn't work to access the library databases from home. | A: The Library's authentication server is housed in Toronto and is not linked to the WebCT or Banner system. If you would like to change your Library PIN, please visit the library for assistance. |
Q: I am a Loyalist graduate (Alumni.) Can I still use the online databases from home/work? | A: Our database licensing limits off-campus access to currently registered students and staff only. You are welcome to use our databases on-campus at any time. |

How do I know which database to use to find it? | A: Search by journal title in our A-to-Z Journal Locator to find out if we carry the journal in our library (in electronic and/or print format.) Q: My teacher said he/she placed an item on reserve in the Library. What does that mean? How do I find it? | A: Faculty may request that items be designated for the Reserve Shelf. These are items which must be requested at the Circulation Desk and include books, videos, classroom notes, etc. which Instructors encourage/direct their students to use and to have access to. This may include items already owned by the Library and/or items belonging to the personal collection of the Faculty member. Library staff can customize the loan period for items as per the Faculty member's instructions. Please ask for reserve items at the Circulation Desk and include the instructor's name. Most items must be used within the library, however a student card is still required to record usage. |
Q: Do you carry the required textbooks for my course(s)? | A: Due to budget limitations, we are unable to purchase textbooks. The Library does endeavour to purchase good quality material to supplement your course requirements. Occassionally Faculty will donate a copy of their textbook which may become part of our regular collection, or which may be placed on our reserve shelf with a limited loan period (1, 2, or 3 days, 1 week, 1 month or in-library use only.) Please check our Library catalogue for the item(s) you require. |
Q: Can I show movies from my home collection and/or ones I've rented from a video store to my class? | A: A Feature Film Screening Report must be completed for ALL Feature Films shown on campus, whether the entire film or a few minutes is shown. Canadian Copyright Law requires all non-theatrical screenings without Public Performance Rights (PPR) to be licensed for educational use, and the information forwarded to the appropriate agencies. Q: How much do photocopies cost? | A: Photocopies cost $0.10 per page. The copier will make copies on either letter-sized (8.5x11") or legal-sized (8.5x14") or ledger-sized (11x17") paper. More elaborate copy and binding options are also available from Xerox Copying Centre located in 1H23. |
