This page allows you to test plug-ins that may be necessary in order to properly view web-based media. Each plug-in serves a specific purpose.

To learn more about each plug-in click on the plug-in name. To test the plug-in simply press "Test Plug-in" in the test section.

If you know the plug-in is not installed in your browser or if the test fails to load anything at all then you can directly download each plugin by clicking on the icon in the download section.

Macromedia Flash
May be required for interactive quizzes, animations, and activities.
Shockwave
May be required for interactive quizzes, animations, and activities.
Some courses use Quicktime Video. Please note: You must also download an Active X plug-in to have Quicktime work properly. Apple used to make this plug-in available as part of the main Quicktime download but no longer does.
RealOne Audio Playe
May be required for streaming video.
Windows Media Player 9
May be required for streaming video.

Conflicts with WebCT have been reported with:

  • Personal Firewalls such as ZoneAlarm, BlackICE, McAfee, Norton, Tiny (will prevent certain documents like Adobe PDF from being opened) -- see below for ports that must be allowed.
  • HotBar's Auto-Update Feature
  • JCreator Java Compiler
  • Pop-Up Blocking Applications *(will prevent quizzes from displaying)
  • Anonymous Cookie Applications
  • Corporate Firewalls (see below for ports that must be allowed)
  • Internet Content Filters

Firewall Ports Used by WebCT:

The following are the port numbers which must be enabled for WebCT to work at Loyalist. If you use a personal firewall application, please open these ports so that your web browser can communicate on these port numbers. If you don't have a personal firewall but are still having problems, contact your local Internet Services Provider to ensure that they have enabled these ports on their institutional firewall.

Port Used for:
80 Normal web server port
8900 WebCT main web server port
8943 WebCT SSL secure server. Used on login screen to encrypt password transmission. Also used by "WebDAV" for transferring files to the server.
4445 WebCT Chat tool port
4567 WebCT Whiteboard tool port
