TVNM – Television and New Media Production

Coordinator: Jane Harrison

School of Media Studies

Program Length:
Three-Year Diploma

Career Opportunities:
A unique new three-year program has been developed to meet the rapidly expanding requirements of the Canadian television and new media industry. The key factors were identified by senior production personnel from major broadcasters and video production houses who make up the television advisory council. The wide variety of technology and high degree of specialization featured in this program prepares graduates for direct entry into one of the following sectors: broadcasting facilities, specialty channels, independent production, new media, digital editing, TV commercial production, video services, and other support services.

Program Description:
Students in the Television and New Media Production program acquire a strong generalist background in the industry, plus each develops a particular capability in an individual area of concentration.

In the first year, students have an opportunity to learn the basic techniques of television and new media, and to discover their own particular interests and talents.

In second year, students begin to specialize. By fourth semester, everything produced goes to air in Belleville, targeting a market of 35,000 homes. “Taste The County”, a cooking show co-produced by the television and hospitality programs at Loyalist, runs on broadcast television in Peterborough, Kingston and Oshawa and also welcomes an audience from the satellite feed.

Third year focuses on the student’s chosen specialization. Particular emphasis is placed on independent production and long-format production. Scripts written in first year, developed in second, come to life in the third year. The process culminates in the screening of these productions at Belleville’s Famous Players Theatre.

Approximate Costs (2003–2004):
Tuition: $2,358.00 (two semesters)
Books and Supplies: $900.00
Consumables Fee: $500.00
Students also need to budget for field placement (six weeks) in Semester Four and internship (eight weeks) in Semester Six.

Admission Requirements:
(a) Required academic preparation -
• OSSD/OSSGD or equivalent with courses at the general, advanced, (C), (U), (M) or (O) level with Grade 12 English
or

Recommended academic preparation:
