RADB – Radio Broadcasting

Coordinator: Liz Marshall

School of Media Studies

Program Length:
Two-Year Diploma

Career Opportunities:
This program prepares people for careers in Canadian Radio. Six broadcast-quality control rooms, a fully-equipped newsroom, digital and analog professional broadcast production facilities and studios are the focus of Radio at Loyalist.

Two college radio stations are staffed and managed by Radio students. A professional standard is maintained so that students operate under actual broadcast conditions. Senior students receive live on-air experience and invaluable training through staffing 92.3 CJLX FM toward the end of first year and throughout their second year.

Placement of Radio students includes work as announcers, producers, sales personnel, news reporters, sportscasters and copywriters in cities including: Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary and Victoria. In the past two years, our graduates have found employment at radio stations such as Y95.3 FM Hamilton, CFRB Toronto, “The Team” Kingston, Y105 FM and KOOL FM Ottawa. Loyalist Radio graduates work throughout the country in large and small markets.

Program Description:
First-year students concentrate on all aspects of radio broadcasting including: announcing, operating, programming, news, sports, copywriting, music, regulation and management.

The second year of the program offers students an opportunity to select from five areas of specialization: Announcing, Copy, Production, Sales, or Promotions. These options have been developed in close co-operation with broadcasters from across the country to provide students with hands-on preparation for on-air or behind-the-scenes careers in the industry.

During the second year, students who have passed all courses and maintained a 2.0 GPA, complete the program by interning at any approved radio station at their own expense.

Students in the Radio Broadcasting program may reserve a place in the post-graduate Media Marketing and Sales program.
