Length:
Two-Year Diploma
Career Opportunities:
Students in the Print Journalism program are considered to be apprenticing
journalists from the first day of their studies. They work as reporters,
photographers, editors and paginators on the College’s award-winning
community newspaper, The Pioneer. Their work is also featured on
The Online Pioneer, the web version of the publication. Graduates
work across Canada as reporters, photographers, editors, freelancers,
and public relations officers. They work as writers for magazines,
web content providers and specialty publications. Students have
interned at prestigious news organizations such as 60 Minutes II,
The Kingston Whig Standard, The Toronto Sun, The Ottawa Citizen,
The Belleville Intelligencer, CTV, and Canadian Geographic. A willingness
to re-locate and a driver’s licence are essential for optimum
career opportunities. A demonstrated interest in community and world
affairs is highly desirable.
Program Description:
Student journalists need energy, curiosity, integrity, good writing
skills, and a commitment to learning their craft. Our hands-on approach
means students are given many chances to learn skills through experience.
Students can access Macintosh computers, digital editing and publishing
equipment, specialized workshops, and one-on-one coaching with faculty
and senior students. The standards of assessment are high. Students’
work is expected to be publishable and professional. Teamwork plays
a major role in each student’s activities.
Students learn to market their work to regional and national publications.
They are encouraged to freelance stories, take on special projects,
and take part-time jobs on local publications. Since they also learn
how to take publishable photos, students need a good digital camera
with minimum 4 megapixel resolution, Zoom lens, and external flash
capability.
Besides working on our community newspaper and online version, students
with a focus on international issues may be invited to contribute
to our special project called IDEALS (The International Development
Education Advanced Learning Strategy). IDEALS is a provincially-funded
joint venture between Loyalist’s print and online journalism
programs and NGOs (non-governmental organizations) from across eastern
Ontario. Those who participate learn community-based journalism
from an international perspective.
In second year, students in consultation with their faculty advisor,
may continue to pursue the full spectrum of journalism or one of
three areas of content specialization:
• Agricultural
• International
• Arts Journalism
In fourth semester, students have an option for further specialization:
magazine, online or advanced reporting. At the end of the program,
students serve a four-week internship on daily or community newspapers,
magazines or other media. Students in the Print Journalism program
may reserve a place for themselves in Ontario’s only post-graduate
program in E-Journalism – Online Publishing and Computer Assisted
Reporting. They may also apply to the Media Marketing and Sales
program.
