PARA – Law & Security Administration – Paralegal

Coordinator: Jane Bailey

Centre for Justice Studies
Justice Studies - First year coordinator - John Bolton
Justice Studies - Curriculum Coordinator - Pat Dockrill

September and January Entry

Program Length:
Two-Year Diploma

Career Opportunities:
The Paralegal Option in the Law and Security Administration program prepares graduates for a wide variety of positions within the legal justice system. Graduates are employed as provincial offence prosecutors, government paralegals and legal assistants, as community legal clinic workers, and as law office litigation support staff.

Program Description:
The first year of the program provides students with a sound knowledge of the justice system and insight into Canadian social and political structures and human behaviour. This first year is common to all Loyalist’s programs in justice services including Correctional Worker, Customs and Immigration (LASA), Corporate and Commercial Security (LASA), and Police Foundations.

Year Two focuses on specialized knowledge and skills, including:
• case preparation and courtroom advocacy in Ontario provincial offence and small claims courts;
• the processes and procedures of administrative bodies such as the Rental Housing tribunal;
• using print and computer database resources to research legislation and case law;
• court enforcement procedures; and
• effective litigation and client information support services.
In the specialized courses classroom instruction is combined with practice labs. Quicklaw training (computer-based legal research), assigned hours in a paralegal student-operated legal information centre and supervised field placement work experiences are included in the program. To be eligible for Year Two, all Year One course requirements must be achieved.

This program includes those areas recommended for provincial approval by the Honorable Mr. Peter Cory in his June 2000 report, “Framework to Regulate Paralegal Practice in Ontario”.

Approximate Costs (2003–2004):
Tuition: $2,358.00 (two semesters)
Books and Supplies: $1,240.00
Relocation and travel may be required for field placement work experience.

Admission Requirements:
(a) Required academic preparation –
• OSSD/OSSGD or equivalent with courses at the general, advanced, (C), (U), (M) or (O) level with Grade 12 English
or
mature applicant

Recommended academic preparation:
• Grade 12 mathematics

(b) Transfer to Another Justice Service Program –
Students who, at the end of Year One, wish to be considered for admission to another justice studies program including Police Foundations, Correctional Worker, Customs and Immigration (LASA), or Corporate and Commercial Security, are encouraged to discuss this with their faculty advisor and/or program coordinator.

(c) Field Placement – Year Two
The ability to meet job requirements and program completion outcomes is demonstrated through required supervised practicum courses. To be eligible for Practicum courses 1 and 2, all theory courses must be successfully completed in each of Semesters Three and Four respectively. In addition, placement agencies may have specific requirements. Students must familiarize themselves with these.

(d) Criminal Record Check –
A criminal record check by the student’s local police service is required before placement in Year Two. Applicants with a criminal record may not be eligible for the required field placement courses. Applicants are encouraged to review their status with the program coordinator.

(e) Health requirements –
A personal health history form must be completed prior to registration. Applicants with special needs or limitations which may affect their potential for future employment are encouraged to discuss their program and career goals prior to enrolment.

(f) Transfer of Credit –
Applicants with prior education equivalent to Year One (university and/or college) normally will be admitted directly to Year Two. Applicants seeking advanced standing are encouraged to meet with the coordinator to review their qualifications.
