Career Opportunities:
The Early Childhood Education program provides learners with a combination of theoretical concepts and application skills related to the best practices in early childhood education. Graduates work in settings which include: nursery schools, infant and toddler programs, child care centres, elementary school settings, medical support programs, cruise ships, private home child care, resource centres, and resorts. An increasing number of graduates are developing programs and services to meet their community needs.

The Loyalist ECE program is delivered as an integrated curriculum model. The theory content is presented in the classroom with application in community-partner early childhood education centres. As well, there is an on-campus curriculum lab, child care centre, and resource centre used by ECE students.

Program Description:
This two-year program provides graduates with skills needed to work with individual and groups of children in a variety of early childhood education settings.
The Loyalist ECE Program consistently ranks high in student and graduate satisfaction according to Key Performance Indicators (KPI). The ECE Program emphasizes partnerships with families, inclusive practices, the project approach to curriculum and best practices based upon current research, enabling graduates to be current with the newest trends.

First Year and Second Year Curricula:
The integrated model emphasizes two complementary components throughout the two years: Child and Adolescent Wellness, and The Learning Environment in relation to infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children. Particular topics are: Child Development and Observation, Safety and Health Practices, Communication and Relationships, Inclusion, Child Guidance, Partnerships, Programming, and Regulations.

The first year of study concentrates on infant and toddler development and programming principles. Communications courses emphasize oral and writing skills along with research skills. The second year focuses on preschool and school-aged children and the consolidation of best practices for the early childhood professional.

Students devote an equal amount of time to theory courses and application of knowledge in practicum throughout the two years. The practica take place in preschools, child care centres, kindergartens and specialized programs. Students are responsible for their own transportation to the College and practicum sites.
