College is southeastern Ontario’s building sciences centre
of excellence specializing in the use of the latest software in
all aspects of these programs. A new laboratory was recently added
for building-science students. This lab consists of Pentium III
computers running Windows NT, AutoCAD 2000, and the latest version
of Land Development Desktop and G.I.S. software.
Program Length:
Technician: Two-year Diploma
Technologist: Three-year Diploma
Career Opportunities:
The Civil Engineering graduate may find employment locally, nationally
or internationally in such areas as surveying, drafting, materials
testing, and estimating on projects involving construction of roads,
bridges, buildings, sewage and water treatment facilities. They
may also be involved in design and supervisory functions.
Program Description:
The program is a balance of theory and practice with a high proportion
of laboratory work and practical exercises to support the knowledge
gained in the classroom. The first year is common to the Survey
and Construction programs allowing for the option to transfer. It
covers basic aspects of civil engineering such as mathematics, drafting
fundamentals (CAD), computer applications, and surveying principles.
In the second year, emphasis is placed on specific civil engineering
subjects such as highway design, structural drafting, materials
testing, municipal water and sewer systems, and estimating. Successful
completion of Year Two qualifies the student for a Civil Engineering
Technician diploma, and those with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better
are entitled to enter the third year (technologist level) of the
program. Greater emphasis is placed on design aspects in third year.
These include the design of structural components in steel and concrete,
the behaviour of fluids in open and closed conduits, supervisory
and report-writing techniques. Graduates may work independently
or interdependently as part of a civil or multi-disciplinary engineering
team.
