College is southeastern Ontario’s building sciences centre
of excellence specializing in the use of the latest software in
all aspects of these programs. A new laboratory was recently added
for building-science students. This lab consists of Pentium III
computers running Windows NT, AutoCAD 2000, and the latest version
of AutoCAD Architectural Desktop.
Program Length:
Technician Two-Year Diploma
Technologist Three-Year Diploma
Career Opportunites:
A wide variety of opportunities exist for employment with consultants
within the building industry.
Consultants: Graduates are engaged in the design,
detail development, project management, and construction review
during a building’s inception. They work with architects,
interior designers, engineers, landscape architects, and
urban planners.
Construction: Graduates find careers as estimators
in construction management, building design, and as manufacturers’
technical and sales representatives.
Client Groups: Graduates find employment in project
and facilities management, building design for development companies,
and in commercial business, institutions, and public housing.
Program Description:
Our program provides students with the
skills and knowledge necessary to contribute actively in work related
to all aspects of design and construction work. Students learn to
analyze needs and design solutions that creatively respond to the
opportunities of function, zoning, costs, environment, context,
and construction methods. They learn to work independently and in
project teams to plan new construction, renovations, and restorations.
As a student of the Architectural program, you will enjoy small
class sizes and the personal attention of professionally-trained
faculty. You will spend much of your time working
on building design projects in well-equipped studio settings, and
using up-to-date computer technology. You will gain the construction
knowledge and graphic, written, and oral communication skills, that
make Loyalist graduates in demand throughout the industry and across
the country.
In the first year, particular attention is given to wood-frame construction
in the context of residential buildings.
In
the second year, the student is involved in the study of commercial
and industrial buildings using masonry, steel
and concrete.
The third-year program is oriented to the study of more complex
construction and engineering systems as applied to institutional
buildings. Each student is given a project as an independent study
unit, compiles a technical report describing the requirements, goes
through the planning and designing process, and produces a presentation
and working drawings for submission to faculty and advisory committee
members.
There is a one-month placement offered in May, when students gain
experience with architects, builders, or other participants in design
and consulting industries. Upon successful completion, the student
is awarded a diploma
in architectural technology.
Flow Through Option:
Our convenient flow through program offers graduation after one
